Thought of the Week: Yisro - 5780

THE HUMBLE - LISTEN

Advice is given with pleasure and received with agitation.  Pareshat Yitro, the Paresha that records the magnificent revelation at Sinai, begins with Moshe's father-in-law, Yitro, providing Moshe with some advice.  Recognizing the challenge Moshe faced on a daily basis with the responsibility to teach and guide the whole nation, Yitro noted that it would be wise to establish a system with a hierarchy to judge the nation when needed.

One might ask why the Torah introduces the portion of the giving of Torah with the suggestion of Yitro.

Humility is one of the necessary attributes needed to be worthy of learning and absorbing Torah.  The humble person who recognizes the fact that he does not know all, is willing to listen to others and learn.

Accepting words of wisdom from others is a sign of humility, and an appropriate way to introduce Torah to the Nation of Israel.
