Thought of the Week: Devorim - 5782

ALONE BUT NOT LONELY

How can I myself alone bear your cumbrance, and your burden, and your strife?”  (Devarim 1:12)

In many congregations the word Eicha (how) is read with the cantillation of Eicha – the book of Lamentations.  This verse, as well as the book of Eicha, begins with a cry of being alone, the most painful human experience.  On Tisha B’Av, we mourn the loss of the structure that unites the Jewish people.  The Beit Hamikdash – the Temple in Jerusalem – would bring together all of Klal Yisrael, where we felt connected to Hashem and to one another.  May we merit seeing the building of the Beit Hamikdash by strengthening our love for all Jewish people.
